Messages From The Past

Messages From The Past

by Glen Farrelly

storm fallen macrocarpa, Yakisugi technique. Messages from the Neolithic period (roughly 10,000–3,000 B.C.) are not written in words, but are instead etched in stone, clay, and bone, revealing a profound shift towards settled life, agricultural dependence, and complex symbolic, spiritual, and social beliefs. These, often called “messages from the past,” were created through artistic, ritualistic, and functional means, such as cup-and-ring marks, intricate spirals in passage tombs, and small figurines.
