Hollyhocks

The sixth painting in a series, the former Hollyhock painting much smaller as they served as studies to meet the technical challenge for this large painting. Painted on site over a period of a week and the completed in the studio. While painting outside and quite close to the subject, I was aware of the miniature insect life that live, eat and die in this leafy, flowery world. The technical aim was to express the luminosity of the blooms, the delicate pattern of the growth and the quiet majesty of the Hollyhock.
